Synchronicity

A certain friend has been on your mind all morning… that afternoon the phone rings.  You almost know before you answer – sure enough, your friend’s voice is on the other end.

Or maybe you’re driving on the freeway.  For some reason you start flashing on having a blowout.  From your passenger side window you suddenly notice a car careening toward the emergency lane.  You see its rear tire crumpled and shredded. If you’re the praying sort, you offer up a quick prayer… there by the grace of God…

I’ve had experiences with what Carl Jung identified as “meaningful coincidences” my entire life.  The tire incident above was my synchronicity while living in Seattle.

The other day, after having written my post on ‘Solitude’ I saw a man pass in front of me wearing a Hawaiian T-shirt with the image of a man playing the guitar.  Underneath was the word:  Solitude.

For a long time now, I’ve tried to understand why these things happen.  Is there a divine message involved?  Is the universe trying to tell us something?  And if so… what?  I’ve Googled this, read books on it… and still I’m not totally clear.

The best I can come up with is that synchronicities tell us we are interconnected.  Perhaps even deeply loved by a universe intent on reaching out to us, no matter how closed off we feel sometimes.  Like a tooth that has been lost, I keep coming back to feel for that empty space of understanding.

Connected to this is the number sequence 11:11.  Has anybody else experienced this phenomenon?  So often, I’ll be about my day, look at the car clock and I’ll see that time.  Or perhaps I’ll be at the computer… Or our little boy will wake up in the middle of the night.  Bingo.  1:11 am.

Lately those numbers have slowed down a bit and I’ll see 4:44 or 5:55… Again, I know there’s a message here!  Googling this, I’ve learned that 11:11 is associated with everything from “Ask and it shall be given” to “This indicates a divine message…Listen!”

I feel these occurences are meaningful.  I may be seeking answers for a long time.  There’s a mystery here that is impossible to deny – or abandon.  Have any of you experienced synchronicities?  Number sequences?  I would love to hear your stories or insights…

There aren’t any answers for few things in this earth. May be that you are thinking too much on things that you shouldn’t be really bothered about. That is what my thought says for now… I may be wrong, but it ignorance is a bliss at times :)

  2. Swaram says:

    Thought-provoking post!

I never knew much abt 11:11 thing!

I hv also felt such coincidences arnd me many times! Sometimes, when I really feel like seeing/talking to someone and I happened to meet them, it feels as though vibes do travel n do the needful!

  3. lostworld says:

I tried really hard to recall a situation b’cos your post got me thinking .. Unsuccessful however ! :-(

But but but.. an aunt of mine always narrates these incidents. She seems to have experienced a lot of it, often in her routine life. Maybe , just maybe you also need to be really alert so that such things catch your attention.

    I suppose I am way too carefree ?! .. :-)

    Good post April.

  4. Robin says:

I was thinking that, “No, I have never experienced anything like that”. Then I got to the part about the 11:11. Guess what time it is? Now you have me all creeped out. I was thinking how what you were saying sounds like some sixth sense….some super natural power……sort of reading the future. I was thinking you might have some gift that you haven’t completely honed in on. But now…..11:11…..I have chills……odd…..odd I would come by today in response to you visit to my blog last week…..last Tuesday……odd that I would come by and read this at this time. hmmm….
I hope you have a beautiful day today.

  5. Leo says:

hmm… i’ve not had any such experience as yet. so can’t say if it means anything or not.
it may be a divine message but to interpret that message, i don’t know how and i guess only the person who it is meant for can interpret it the way it is to be interpreted! :)

a chilling post… very thoughtfully written & very much thought provoking!

  6. Titaxy says:

hmmm i can’t recall anything as of now..but a thought provoking post, indeed…maybe i should just observe more and see if such things happen..

  7. blueviolet says:

I must have experienced something like this before but I’m probably not paying as much attention as I should. Your experiences are fascinating to me though.

  8. Vicki says:

I have had things like this happen. the one that gets me (and I know we all feel like we have BEEN through the even before and that is why it is called deja vu), is that I swear I have DREAMED some things before they happen. Crazy I know. I probably am. but I feel ya!

  9. Blond Duck says:

    You’re making me think…

  10. what a great post. i’m sure everyone experiences such things at one time or another in their lives but to interpret this could take a long time. i’m sure you’ll continue to make connections for a long time. maybe you could record these experiences in a notebook to compare experience against your thoughts and interpretations. have a great night. btw, love those pictures especially that first one.

  11. Calliopespen says:

Chills. Coincidentally, we had a really interesting discussion about this on my blog a few weeks ago:) I’ll leave a trackback here so you can see what others have said :) http://calliopespen.wordpress.com/2009/08/04/coincidentally/

  12. Jaymie says:

I had an experience years ago that fit into this category. Unfortunately it was part of a very tragic situation. I had to let go of watching for these times in order to find peace. I know, counter intuitive.

  13. Shruthi says:

Now that I look back, yes, few things have been coincidental in my life and they creep me out. how does it work!

p.s. the pictures put up are fantastic, April. Love them :)

  14. I really appreciate ur findings for ur questions. It felt to me too. But u summed it up as ‘Synchronicity’.
Well..I haven’t given a thought to it…but ll come up wid it soon….
    nice post…..:P

  15. A post close to my heart. I’ve had so many synchronicities throughout my life, and as you know, I research the subject deeply. It’s truly fascinating.

  16. Sara Fryd says:

I just read Synchronicity, go poking around to read all the new stuff, find the button, come back to my email to write you a note to add my URL and the only email I have is yours. So April here’s another “connection.” I’m familiar with the California freeways (22 years), you have to be sychronized to drive there. Often have a picture of a head driving with eyes circling the top like a hat. Your stories are fantastic and the website is beautiful. Great job both of you.

  17. Theta Mom says:

Thought provoking for sure, but for me, I don’t see any deep meaning in the numbers. Sometimes coincidence, but that’s about it.

Thanks for entering my giveaway. You rock, as always. :)

  18. carma says:

very interesting. Many times I look at the clock and it is the minute of the hour that I was born. Used to happy very frequently. Now, not as much. What is really freaky is when I think of someone I haven’t heard from in a while and then they call. Or sometimes my husband and I think about the same odd thing on the same day..

  19. Geraldine says:

I can SO relate to what you are writing about here Shraddha. Excellent post, thank you!

  20. I think of these experiences as glimpses through the veil. The cosmic consciousness is all knowing all aware,. We are a part of that consciousness the way a drop of water is part of the ocean or a leaf is part of its tree. So every now and then we become a little more aware when we are tuned in to the super conscience of which we are a part.

  21. Kiersty says:

It happens to me all the time and I am comforted by it. I could cite so many instances but each one would be equably unbelievable. I just smile to myself and tuck it away.
‘When you live your life with an appreciation of coincidences and their meanings, you connect with the underlying field of infinite possibilities.’ Deepak Chopra.

  22. I’ve had experiences like this. 09:08 is “my time”. And I can’t tell you how many times I just KNOW what the next song coming ont othe radio will be….

  23. veronica lee says:

Thought provoking but I don’t think I’ve experienced anything like that before or maybe I have and didn’t notice.

  24. mary taitt says:

I’ve had very strong synchronicity events all my life–and lots of things with 11:11! SO much so it’s almost become a joke! Dreams, visions, unbelievable coincidences, over and over.

One time we were out on an Island in Maine and we walked on a trail, then went off the trail, down through the woods. climbed through some rocks went past a sign that said dangerous rocks, do not go past this sign, and discovered beyond the next rock a friend and neighbor painting who we had no idea was in the area.

I met my husband when a little old man told me to go somewhere the next day–I couldn’t get his words out of my mind–I went there and met my husband. Both of us were from distant places. But we had the weirdest coincidental things in common–we had each skinned our pet hamsters when they’d died, for example–how many kids did that?

I could go on and on.

  25. SandyCarlson says:

I believe in synchronicity. I think it’s an underestimated thing.

  26. What a great post. I can’t quote you a specific incident right now, well, other than I sent an email to a friend recently, and she replied saying she was just thinking about me. That happens to me all the time, and the clock thing too. I have never thought to google it thought, that’s very clever. Thanks for including me in the linky list. Hope you have a good one!

  27. I definitely have to admit that I will start thinking about someone that I haven’t seen or heard of in a long time and then they will call or come around or something will happen to them. It is sometimes weird how the universe works.

  28. I never knew that about 11:11… so interesting! I’ve had situations like these happen to me all the time. It still amazes me!

  29. Kristen says:

yes I do think they happen for a reason and are meant to send us messages, I too didn’t know that about 11:11 thanks for sharing

  30. Mama Mel says:

What a great post with awesome pictures! I often think about stuff like this too, but never wonder as deeply as you. I do believe everything happens for a reason… good and bad. I guess we won’t find out why until later. :)

  31. suchismita says:

beautiful pic. I am sure we all have such experiences …a feeling of deja vu. there is somuch that science cannot explain yet!

  32. I think a lot happens out there that we’re just not attuned to, but mean something – great to see you’re picking up on some of it!

  33. I don’t say that ur idea is wrong or i disagree with it ……….but this according to me is something which can be xplained by theories of probability……..i m not a guru of the subject but i have this believe that probability can answer these stuff……..

If you look around you will find a pattern in it……..for that sake ur own behavior, anyone …….if you just take the case like what we do when we see a beautiful girl…….thr will big be a big group of people who will just see appreciate the beauty and move on,while thr are many who go and talk…….but still if you take these two case and make a group and based on only these two chances that either people see the girl and appreciate the beauty and other chance of going and talking to her. Then when you pick a random person from a group then you will be atleast 50% sure of either of two cases.

But in real life case there a many people and also there is a whole different lot of behavior so the whole process of calculation and prediction becomes very complex, but still i believe if we could calculate it then we would be able to predict it or what you call synchronicity.

  34. annie says:

I don’t believe in coincidences. Synchronicity is the perfect description for these moments that merge into one validating event. I know such things have happened to me because I remember the feeling of awe if not the actual event. Your words here remind me that I hope to be more fully conscious of these events in the future and then write the event down. As I age, I come to understanding that there is so much I don’t want to forget so that I can share the experience. I suppose that, for me, that is what blogging is all about. My life, my memories, the knowledge and insight I’ve gained, is all here to be share with my family and with my wider family of the world.

  35. Suzanne says:

Hmmm…you know, I think I have. I brush them off so I can’t even recall exactly a single example but I know there have been a lot of moments that stop me in my tracks. And here is a confession…I’ve never really understood the whole “synchronicity” thing..until now. Thanks!

  36. Bschooled says:

This is a great post, April.

Those “solitude” types of coincedences always seem happen to me. So much so that I almost dont’ notice it anymore.

As for the 11:11, you taught me something new…now it’s my turn to go talk to my good friend, Mr. Google…:)

  37. UmaS says:

11:11 – hearing it for the first time.

So many times, my heart is telling me to call a friend, but I am engrossed in some thing and I am unable to get out of it. Then, I hear the phone ringing and its that friend I had wanted to call. How did she know that I wanted to talk to her ???

My hubby buys what I had yearned for, without me talking about it – he never buys what I ask him to buy.

And so I also believe, that we people are interconnected in some way !!

  38. mary taitt says:

When I am walking and timing my walk stop my watch, it stops on interesting number combinations and repeats far more often than it seems it should.

When I say something aloud or am thinking it, someone comes ont he radio and says the same thing.

  39. mary taitt says:

Even if I am not aware of a specific connect, it reminds me to TUNE IN and WAKE UP!

  40. Stacie says:

I will be back a little later to read your post. I have an award for you on my website. Once I get done contacting people you will find it here http://supermommytotherescue.com/awards :)

  41. mary taitt says:

Hope your holiday weekend is wonderful.

  42. bettyl says:

Sometimes, we read into things more than what is really there, I think. But then there is always the stuff that never has an explanation.

I pray for a lot of situations and it’s never ‘there by the grace of God’. It’s usually more about ‘Please have mercy, Lord!’

  43. mary taitt says:

I always write that date year (with two digits), Month, with two digits, day with two digits on my writing, photos and art. Then the computer can arrange them chronologically. So today is 090909. This is a good number, a number of IMPORT, but I don’t know if anything good will come of it.

So far, the only thing that has happened that was unusual was this this: I was listening to an audio book and at the same time, cooking oatmeal for breakfast. The audio book said the word BUZZ and at that very moment, the timers (I always set two) for the oatmeal both buzzed.

I can’t think of any particular significance to this, other than it being synchonistic–except to say, pay attention. Wake up. However, I am open to an acceptance of some meaning for it, real or assigned.

    * * *
I was reading a book about strange killings and while I was reading it, a series of dead birds appeared along the path I walk every day, a different bird each day. This was very eerie and strange and I could find no explanation for it.

  44. mary taitt says:

I had another little synchronous event this morning. A “silly” little thing, but just a reminder! I was doing exercises, counting (sit-ups) and listening to an audio book (Blasphemy!) and when I got to the 33rd sit up and was saying 33, 34, just exactly as I said 33 and then went on to 34, the audio book said, 33, 34, right with me. And 33 is one of those numbers!

  45. Amy says:

    I stumbled this!
